Pearlite formation in steels
Pearlite formation in steel (A. Gie?mann)
The pearlitic transformation has been a challenging scientific topic since the pioneering work of C. Zener many decades ago. In the traditional view the parent austenite (light blue) phase decomposes simultaneously into ferrite (dark blue) and cementite (red) during a solid state transformation.(see movie). During the transformation ferrite and cementite grow cooperatively forming pearlite?s lamellar structure. In this project we investigate the influence of the diffusion in different phase as well as the effect of misfit stresses between the phases on the kinetics of the pearlitic transformation and the resulting lamellar spacing. |
