Research Assistant (f/m/d)

with the option for PhD in “Defect identification in microdiffraction patterns using convolutional neural networks” (29,87 h/w, 3 years)

The Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB) is one of Germany’s leading research universities in material science. It draws its strengths from the wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines on one coherent campus, thus providing excellent infrastructure for interdisciplinary research projects. This highly dynamic setting enhances students’ and researchers’ cross-disciplinary and -departmental cooperation.

We offer a third-party-funded doctoral position (29,87 h/w, temporary for three years) in a DFG project titled “Automated identification of dislocation structures from experimental Laue microdiffraction patterns”. It is in the group “Materials Informatics and Data Science” of Prof. Stricker. and aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the connection between dislocation microstructure and Laue microdiffraction patterns by using discrete dislocation dynamics simulations, convolutional neural networks, and a large existing experimental dataset from collaborators. The final model ultimately leads to improved capabilities to observe defects to develop a fundamental understanding of materials used in energy conversion and storage, and a better understanding of hydrogen embrittlement.

We are looking for an outstanding candidate with at least two of the following qualifications and an according track record.

  • Background in computational materials science with applications in plasticity, ideally based on Discrete Dislocation Dynamics
  • Experience in experimental materials science, ideally Laue microdiffraction analysis (e.g. LaueTools)
  • Experience in programming with compiled languages (FORTRAN/C++)
  • Experience in the application of machine learning techniques such as convolutional neural networks

Preferable skills include

  • Experience with the Python programming language
  • Experience in large software projects, including version control and software testing
  • Experience with Linux/Unix environments

In addition, fluent English, both written and oral, is strictly required.

Please send your application documents (cover letter, 1-page motivational letter, CV with certificates) referring to ANR 153 in one pdf document by e-mail to Jun.-Prof. Dr.- Ing. Markus Stricker markus.stricker@rub.de

Please note that travel expenses, accommodation costs and loss of earnings for interviews are not reimbursed.

At Ruhr-Universität Bochum, we wish to promote the careers of women in areas in which they are underrepresented, and we would therefore like to encourage female candidates to send us their applications. Applications by suitable candidates with severe disabilities and other applicants with equal legal status are likewise most welcome.
