My mission:

Volumetric strain obtained by heterogeneous thermal expansion of a model metallic glass. Resulting internal stresses show strong impact on mechanical properties and relaxation dynamics
My research focuses on the thermo-mechanical properties of metallic glasses, especially the impact of deep cryogenic thermal cycling on ductility and relaxation dynamics.
Metallic glasses are metallic solids with a heterogeneous atomic structure. This leads to spatially varying thermo-mechanical quantities (e.g. elastic moduli, thermal expansion coeff.). By applying oscillatory load (shear/compression or temperature changes), these heterogeneities can be used to manipulate the plastic behavior of such systems. Finally, I try to connect these phenomena with the local structure of metallic glasses. I am using different computational and numerical tools to address these issues:
  • molecular dynamics simulations of a generic model glass former using LAMMPS
  • on-the-fly and post-mortem statstical analysis
  • corase-graining techniques making the heterogeneous nature of amorphous systems seizable
