Phase-field models are well established tools to investigate microstructure evolution during the making of materials. The strength of phase field models basically results from the combination of defect energies (interfaces, line- or point defects) with chemical energies of alloys and elastic energies in a comprehensive manner on the one hand. On the other hand they rely on robust and accurate numerical solution. All this at hand materials scientists can make virtual materials from arbitrary ingredients. To design an alloy in combination with the control of its microstructure to desired properties is the dream of all materials scientists. The talk will review the state of the art in phase-field modeling, refer to the necessary link to other methods established in computational materials science and comment of future challenges and perspectives.
