Self healing: a new concept to make engineering materials more durable

Date: 01.07.2013
Time: 3:00 p.m.

Sybrand van der Zwaag, Department of aerospace structures and materials, TU Delft, Delft, The Netherlands

For the past 20 centuries, material practitioners and material scientists have tried to make the materials they design/create to be more durable/reliable by focussing on concepts following from the 'damage prevention' paradigm. Nature on the other hand has concluded that damage is unavoidable and seems to have been inspired by the 'damage prevention' paradigm. In this interactive (i.e. the audience has to work too) presentation the base concepts of the design of 'self healing materials' will be explained and examples of self healing polymers, metals, composites, asphalt and concrete repaired by bacterial interventions will be presented.
