Co and Ta are important alloying additions for superalloys and a robust thermodynamic description of this system is needed for reliable CALPHAD databases for these alloys. This system gained importance with recent discovery of the γ’ (L12) ordered phase in the Co-Al-W system. Several assessments of the Co-Ta system are available in the literature, however, a re-assessments is planned because none of these descriptions fulfills the requirements of a state-of-the-art multi-component database. These requirements will be described and a a strategy for the development of such a description will be presented.
