Magnetic shape-memory alloys: phenomenology and mechanisms

Magnetic shape-memory alloys (MSMA) tend to deform up to 10% when exposed to a magnetic field. In a variable magnetic field, the strain is reversible. Inversely, when deformed mechanically, the magnetization of the material changes. These extraordinary properties open new avenues for the design of actuators, sensors, and even power generation devices.
