The phase-field method has emerged as the method of choice for simulation of microstructure evolution and phase-transformations in material science. One key application is solidification, precipitation heat treatment and thermomechanical processing of Ni-base superalloys. The talk will review the principles of phase-field modeling in a thermodynamic consistent framework, highlighting some historical aspects of model development. Special emphasis will be given to aspects of coupling chemistry and mechanics. Some recent results within the SFB/TR 103 “Superalloys Single Crystal” will be presented.
