While the capacity of Li-Ion battery materials is mainly determined by the phase state and composition of the bulk materials, the speed of charging largely depends on the microstructure. A thermodynamically consistent way to combine bulk thermodynamics with diffusion and transfer of charged species at interfaces is given by the framework of the multi- phase-field theory. The talk will discuss the main building blocks of a phase-field model to simulate charge transfer in Li-Ion battery materials. First simulations are presented demonstrating the viability of the approach and indicating its limitations.
