How can the microstructure of lightweight magnesium castings be controlled in industrial processes? By tuning the alloy to the process. To speed up the search for optimal alloy compositions related to the type of casting process we employ the CalPhad technique for predicting the stability of primary and secondary phases and the Phase Field technique to predict kinetics of transformation and morphology of the microstructure. The predictions are compared to critical casting experiments. The figure shows the calculated microstructure in the outer zone of a chill casting of AZ31 magnesium alloy.
