Abstract

Vanadium as alloying element is known to have a positive effect on the grain size and strength of precipitation hardening steels. This effect comes from pinning of grain boundaries and thereby slowing down grain coarsening during austenitization.

In this study we present the investigation of growth of vanadium carbides (VC) in y-iron under different conditions. An iron-vanadium-carbon model simulations were performed using the multi-component multi-phase field model implemented in the OpenPhase code. The influence of concentrations, stresses and other material constants on VC precipitation during hot rolling at austenitic temperatures was investigated and compared to experimental data.

Phase transformations were controlled by calculation of Gibbs energy densities and their derivatives using the CALPHAD type models. A coupling between the chemical and elastic effects is also taken into account.
