Abstract
The SA508 steel Gr3 is widely used in reactor pressure vessels due to its high strength and toughness [1] which is important for the long-operation life of this material. Some investigations [2-3] evaluate the effects of the precipitation of nanometer-sized carbides in the ferrite matrix and how this could improve the mechanical properties of steels for nuclear applications. In order to evaluate the precipitation of carbides in the SA508 steel, thermodynamic calculations were performed by using the new property module calculator in the Thermo-Calc software. The calculations of the driving force and interfacial energy were performed at the tempering temperature 650 °C [2]. We varied the composition of the elements which produces carbides to improve the design and properties of this alloy.
