  • Place: 16th Discussion Meeting on Thermodynamics of Alloys (TOFA 2018), Seoul, Korea

Abstract

Nickel-based superalloys are produced and used since more than 70 years whereas Cobalt-based superalloys (1) are being developed since less than 15 years. With the help of the expertise gained in the former, the progress in understanding and optimising properties of the later is fast. The A1/L12 microstructure which creates the excellent high temperature performance of these alloys requires advanced knowledge of elastic behaviour as a function of alloy composition (usually 9 to 10 elements) in order to extend their operational lifetime. Using the same approach of CALPHAD, from binaries to higher order, the experimental determination of enthalpies of mixing/formation are required or to use in thermodynamic modelling or to validate first-principles based methods. In this talk an overview is given on these alloys pointing out the most urgently required experimental information.
