Abstract

An accurate representation of the material microstructure is fundamental in understanding the relationship between microstructure and its corresponding mechanical behavior. Kanapy is a robust and an efficient tool to generate synthetic microstructures within the micro mechanical framework for Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations. It is developed to provide an alternative to the existing Random Sequential Addition technique of microstructure generation. And designed to model simple and complex grain morphologies, thus overcoming the limitations of spatial tessellation methods. The general framework of Kanapy is based on the collision driven particle dynamics approach for packing particles, and it employs an octree spatial partitioning data structure for accelerating the collision checks. The performance aspects of Kanapy are measured with respect to the simulation time for the particle packing and the in-built voxelization routines. And the ability to generate complex microstructures is validated through statistical comparisons of input and output size distributions.
