Many years ago, the decoding of the human genome bestowed a new branch of research upon the field of biology - the bioinformatics. A similar trend is observable in materials science. For now, Prof. Dr. Markus Stricker, research group leader for materials informatics and data science, is still somewhat of an exotic figure in his field of research in Germany. The reasons for as to why this is unlikely to remain the case in the future and what potential the materials informatics has to offer, are explained by him in this interview.
