My mission:

(a) Microstructure evolution and GSD in alumina fibers Nextel 610 at 1300°C; (b) grain boundary diffusion of MnO from a matrix to a fiber in alumina mini-composites.
The research project focuses on the investigation of the grain growth (GG) in ceramics by means of new methods based on the phase-field modeling (PF). We study the anisotropic abnormal grain growth in the ceramic mini-composites (MC) and fiber after heat treatment, which microstructure at high temperatures can contain small grains and large grains of 200-300 nm. The related application is the quantitative prediction of the kinetics of the grain growth in presence of a dopand in the matrix of MC. The influence of the segregation of different matrix additives such as silica, MnO, on the GG is examined. A new PF model takes into account the reducing grain boundary (GB) mobility due to segregation effect. The model can also consider the evolution of pores and their interaction with GB during GG. The remaining unknown material parameters such as diffusion of matrix components along GB, GB mobility, are estimated by the comparison of the simulated microstructure, GSD and composition field with experimental results for MC of Nextel 610.
